First thing said to me was "you're early". I was 50 minutes ahead of schedule due to a fast flight and faster-than-expected transit from gate to car agency. I overheard other representatives imposing penalties for dropping the car off (or picking up) earlier or later than the booked time. In the end, I managed to get what I needed, but I got the sense that part of the business model is "gotcha" fees imposed above and beyond. I would expect a fee if you keep the car longer than the agreed number of days, but imposing fees fro dropping off early?! Vehicle also was unable to connect to my phone via bluetooth or USB.
The Ford Edge that was waiting for me whould have failed a State Inspection! Its passenger-side tail lamp assembly was taped to the body and I was sure it would have fallen off at some point during my rental thus attracting a California patrolman on my heels. I refused to take that car and then there weren't too many choices (the lot was full of SUVs though). I was offered a white Jeep Wrangler with bald tires and a black Jeep Wrangler that didn't have any visible issues. I opted for the black Jeep Wrangler which was noisy and rough on the road throughout my rental. Broken tail lamp and bald tires - is my road safety not the concern of Europcar? I was glad to have my brother-in-law with me who just retired from his job as a Service Manager in a car dealership. I traded a quiet vehicle for a noisy, rough and gaz-guzzling ride for lack of options offered to me! On top of that, the rental agent hit me up for a $12.99 a day to add a 2nd driver for all the 12 days of rental. For a 12-day long rental, why was I punished for adding a 2nd driver - just one driver for all 12 days? My wife was with me and I thought I shouldn't have to pay extra to let her drive while I am sitting next to her - but the rental agent disagreed! Would I choose the same rental car company again? Not at all. I didn't select Europcar for any cheap rates! I was looking for a spacious SUV that can contain 4 pieces of baggage along with a rollon and I found one with Europcar and paid the entire rental amount in full in advance when I booked the vehicle. The rental agent didn't even offer me any options such as a free upgrade or free 2nd driver add-on. I got of a flight from Canada, took a maze of trains to get to the rental location and the rental agent had me over a barrel. I took what I could get under the circumstances but wouldn't do that again!
Took two hours in line to pick up
It took 2.5 hours to pickup the car. Then the car was notably old, and had a number of dings in it. Many other folks were given cars with half full gas tanks while I was there as well. They had to notice and the company wasn’t upfront about it.
Horrible experience, never been so rudely treated and lied to in all my years as a business traveler. Trying to force you to buy extra insurance under the premise that the car has NO insurance at all and they can not rent out a car w/o insurance. When I explained that according to the law, all rental car has basic insurance and that my Amex card will cover the CDW he became very rude and did everything he could to prevent us from renting the car. Asking for our passports, never under my 20+ years renting cars in the USA have we even been asked to show passports and then he demanded that we show him our international driver's licenses. Did not know that such a thing even existed anymore, it's just a translation. So we had to cancel the whole thing and take the long trip back to SFO airport Worst ever
